Happy Halloween!

Halloween - Julie Hamilton Designs {artistically afflicted blog}

Happy Halloween from all of us here in Tapleys Farm, Whistler B.C

This neighbourhood is not for the faint of heart when Halloween rolls around. Fifty decorated homes, 500 screaming children, 20,000 pieces of candy, bonfires, mulled wine, music, fireworks…Utter chaos.

I have my tickle trunk full of costumes from naughty to nerdy all ready for last-minute costume prep. There are always the token few who don’t like to dress up, but then can’t resist getting in the spirit of it all. I guarantee my hand painted snowflake pants will be coming out to play, but I am not sure what will be accompanying them this year.

I like to leave my costume to the last-minute ~ always have, always will.

Sharing a few Halloween inspired sketches and artwork created for A Fresh Bunch.  Halloween is one of the top commercial holidays and I am realizing that I will be needing to create a lot more art licensing work for it. This is a start!

I love to see how people create. What mediums they like to use~ pencil, pen, ink or paint.I love to see how characters and motifs are developed. I love to see how people come up with ideas and what sparks their imagination. I also love to see all the different variety of lines and textures used.  I think it’s a great way to get inspired and learn from others.

doodling my surroundings @artisticallyafflicted

I am in the business of making motifs. It takes a lot of time doodling and mark making. Time to practice and try new things. I need all the inspiration I can get so thought it would be fun to try and get others to share their work. Here is what is inspiring me lately on #shareyoursketch.

{artistically afflicted blog} #shareyoursketchHeather Dutton (@hangtight) of Hang Tight Studio shares proof that inspiration can come from anywhere. This quirky character is the result of a blob of coffee spilt on the floor.  Heather is pretty active on Instagram. The next two are also some sketches that Heather shared.

{artistically afflicted blog} #shareyoursketchSome more doodles waiting to get turned into pattern..

{artistically afflicted blog} #shareyoursketchMary Tanana (@groovity)  of Groovity Designs shares her tropical doodles, a result of her time in Make Art that Sells. I believe these were used for the tropical fusion bloghop which you can see here  – beautiful!

{artistically afflicted blog} #shareyoursketchI love this giraffe all zentangled up shared by Angelica Venegas. (@portallerdepapel). This drawing was done by her daughter Rocio.  Her zentangle work looks fantastic here and has inspired me to try some of my own.

Here is another zentangle sketch courtesy of Aryanda Septian (@Ariyandaaa) from Indonesia. Her Instagram feed is full of beautiful sketching, shading and lots of portraits. A whole other world I have yet to explore.

This hipster, shared by Lori Leissner (@leissnerart) just makes me smile. I love his look and his poodle pooch companion. I could see this character developed in so many ways. Lori was in a very loong meeting when she shared this.

Sketches can be in color too! I love this one by Pam Keravuori (@pamkeravuori) created while  hanging at the waterpark with her young daughter. That made me laugh – I first started doodling while spending many an hour at the park with young children in tow. There is lots more color and wonderful type on her feed.

Inspired by creative momentum

The month of May has turned out to be a bit of a whirlwind taking me from Surtex 2013 in the heart of NYC to the wilderness of Vancouver Island B.C. for a week of camping. Its been busy and it’s been fun.

I am really enjoying the app PicCal.( A big thank you to Sam Osborne and her Month in the life of a designer series for introducing it to me)

I often get a bit to caught up in my creative life and have that crazy feeling that I am one step behind and  not accomplishing all that I have set out to do. By arranging a visual diary of my month, I realize that I actually have been super productive and on track!   Below are some of the bits and pieces I would like to share with you.

The making of my handmade business cards is slowly coming together. How much fun is it to create your very own, one of a kind, business cards?People love them. It’s like giving a tiny piece of your art to someone.

I will post more pics when they are finished.

I had a super opportunity to spend the day with David Olson, storyteller extraordinaire and Community Director at Hoot Suite. I sat and listened to him tell stories all day long! He is animated and fun~ a joy to learn from. I thought I would share some of my notes with you.Speaking of social media…

A little reminder that social media is free. Please use it to your best advantage. I did!

Stay tuned for more..

My #365patterns  project continues.I thought this pattern was kind of fun and perfect for a summer BBQ!  I have to admit that due to the circumstances I didn’t create a pattern every day for the month of May, however, I did make an effort to at least sketch a motif daily. Lots more over on Instagram.

Finally, a little something I had fun with while camping in the rain in the wilderness of B.C. A reminder to just get inspired by whatever the circumstances. Create daily! Keep the creative juices flowing.

Its been a busy and very productive month! I feel a sense of accomplishment~ a good motivator to just keep at it.

Thanks for dropping by!

Inspired by mark making

Some weeks are just harder than others to create. Last week was one of those weeks.

Some weeks I just get brain overload ~ I want to draw and create too many things. This usually happens when I am pressed for time and have other priorities looming. A definite form of procrastination. I call it productive procrastination no time is left wasted.

I started seashells, sailboats and surfboards..but nothing was catching. Not even flowers which are always my go to.

So,in search of simplicity, I finally decided to do just that ~ keep it simple. I lay my journal and black pen out on the kitchen counter and dedicated the week to mark making. Whenever inspiration hit I doodled some marks…Drive by doodling.

I often find myself needing texture and backgrounds in my work. This applies to both drawing and painting. I find it quite handy having a reference list of marks that I can refer to in times when my mind goes blank.I also need more coordinates for my patterns. Interesting marks and textures make great coordinates. They also make great geometric patterns.

I love black and white. There are no restrictions, no complementary colors to think about and absolutely no worries if they go well together. If your design doesn’t look good in black and white then there is a very good chance color is not going to be able to save it!

This is not the first time I have done this! I like to doodle and love my black pens.I am still waiting for my Sharpie pen sponsorship…
Remember to come and #shareyoursketch with me over on Instagram.

We have been hit hard with long, glorious summer-like days. We always like to say that we have our own little piece of heaven here in Whistler, B.C. and right now it’s definitely feeling that way.The mountains are full of snow, the sky bluebird and the flip-flops are out!Very unusual weather for this time of year and not to be missed.

Next week I am heading off to NYC to Surtex. Eek! I will be walking the show and just trying to get a feel for this industry that I have thrown myself into it. I am expecting to be overwhelmed.I am ready for it! Will keep you posted!

Have a great week everyone!

Inspired by some sketchy sunday behaviour

I am always amazed at how my mind can wander when drawing. I should sit and write down all the crazy ideas that run through my head just for a laugh, but I cringe to think what I would sound like.

My latest idea to keep my creative juices flowing freely is to be computer free on Sundays. No web surfing, email, or.. gasp…no social media. I want to spend the day focused on the here and now.
artisticallyafflicted blog, julie hamilton design

My hope for this time-out day is to be creative. I don’t have a problem being creative,I know that starting is the key to my success, however, I do find that I am more creative and productive when my mind is free and open. I tend to be easily distracted by the computer and I find it can be very disruptive to my thought process. I am learning to love the feeling of being disconnected.

So, my latest idea is to spend Sundays sketching and sharing on Instagram and, of course, here on my blog. Please join me here on Instagram – I will follow you back.

julie hamilton designs, artistically afflicted blog
My original plan to hashtag sketchy sundays(#sketchysundays) unfortunately will have to be changed. For a laugh you can check out my floral doodles amidst some other sketchy sunday behaviour. I swear those other photos were not there when I originally posted to it!I am having my own laugh about the extent of my ‘sketchy” behaviour – maybe if you are lucky I will pop out a nudie for you instead of my usual floral doodle.

After some more careful research I have decided to call it #shareyoursketch.

A creative space to share your sketches, inspiration, mindwork and even your finished product! It doesnt have to be on Sunday!. I love to see how other minds work and what they are inspired by. I also love to see what they can produce from all their inspiration. You have to admit we are all a very talented bunch so please…share away!

#shareyoursketch …now on Instagram and twitter too.

Have a great week. It’s beautiful and sunny here and hopes are high that it is going to stay this way.

p.s. Thank you for the great response to my shout out for “creative process” submissions. I am looking forward to featuring others in my community here. I am just in the process of figuring out the details and just the right questions to ask. I will keep you posted!
